The connections that span generations
ROOT & GENEALOGY

France

Identify the event locality and the department holding its registers. Start with available tables, then read the full record.

Prepare your research

Exact commune, department, record type, period, parish for church records and known relatives. Keep consulted references to avoid an overly broad enquiry.

The method, step by step

  1. For earlier generations locate the parish and surviving religious registers. Parish and municipal boundaries may differ.
  2. Explore censuses, notarial and military records in appropriate collections. Record references and gaps before visiting.
  3. Access periods and online availability depend on document type. Check repository guidance rather than inferring access from a date alone.

Choose the right repository

For local records start with municipality and departmental or municipal archives. FranceArchives helps locate the repository; ANOM covers specific overseas collections.

Choose a route from the record you have

  1. With a record or index, note commune, type, year and number; then locate the holding service’s register. Keep historical commune and current address separate.
  2. With only a name or occupation, use newspapers and directories for place and dates, then return to records. For overseas history, identify territory and creator before ANOM databases.

Find archives

FranceArchives →

The national portal provides finding aids and guidance for French archival collections. Use it to identify the repository, then visit departmental or municipal archive websites for digitised registers. Searches may retrieve collection descriptions rather than every person named in a record.

It is not a complete civil registration database. Availability depends on repository and period.

Gallica — Bibliothèque nationale de France →

Digital library useful for newspapers, directories and official publications. Search a person with a place and period, then check the image.

Text recognition may omit or distort names. Check the newspaper’s coverage and each item’s reuse conditions.

Archives nationales d’outre-mer — ANOM →

Guidance to French overseas archival collections and databases.

A listed territory does not imply all its records or populations are covered.
