Luxembourg: move from indexes to full records

ANLux organises civil-record guidance by municipality. A ten-year index locates events; the record remains necessary for people, relationships and annotations. Use the portal announced in 2026 rather than old Query addresses still present in some help pages.

The method, step by step

  1. Define birth, marriage or death and a short interval. Check if the municipality is in Luxembourg today. Guidance directs former-duchy localities outside it to other territories. Luxembourg alone does not establish ANLux custody; keep original place and identification separate.
  2. Open archives.services-publics.lu through the official announcement or current access page. Identify collection, municipality, event and unit dates. Interfaces change: retain title and reference rather than just a navigation screenshot. If an old link fails search by record reference.
  3. Copy index spelling, year and pointer. Open the register and check number or date. Record the full entry and annotations before summarising. An index may simplify a name: retain both forms, references and each source’s role. Check parents and witnesses before linking the record to your tree.
  4. Without an accessible image retain description and access conditions. Current guidance requires portal registration for reading-room orders. To support identity examine census or notarial records with their own scope. Parish registers follow the diocesan holder indicated by guidance, not automatically the civil series.

Frequently asked questions

Which portal should I use for Luxembourg archives in 2026?

ANLux’s official announcement says archives.services-publics.lu replaced Query on 20 March 2026. Use that announcement or current access guidance; some old help links still point to Query. Retain reference and title to recover records if addresses change.
