Poland’s public archives portal provides descriptions and digitised records. Its specialist vital-record search uses locality, denomination and dates to choose creating parishes, communities or offices.
Prepare your research
Original place and identification; known or uncertain denomination; creator; event; dates; collection and unit; scans; record and image numbers; identity comparison.
The method, step by step
- Establish locality, denomination, event and date interval. Select creator, check title and years, then open available images. Seek the volume’s internal index and check the full record before accepting identity.
- Portal filters distinguish descriptions and scans. Follow unit and repository guidance for records without images; record collection, unit and image number separately.
Choose the right repository
Keep the place name as written, then verify identification and historical creator. Parish, municipality and civil-registration office are not necessarily interchangeable.
Choose a route from the record you have
- Name known, place missing: first seek a family or migration record giving the locality. Place-based vital-record search cannot alone resolve a common surname.
- Place and denomination known: identify office or parish and check each unit’s years. Record “description found”, “images available” and “record read” separately; they are different results.

The portal’s specialist vital-record search is not a personal-name search. A description does not guarantee scans for every year. Check creator and dates of each unit.
