ROOT & GENEALOGY

Luxembourg

ANLux genealogy guidance covers civil registration, censuses, notarial records and fiscal sources. Start with municipality and event; parish registers follow a different route through diocesan archives.

Prepare your research

Modern and historical municipality; event; interval; index reference; pointer; register reference; record and annotations; current access; complementary source.

The method, step by step

  1. Record municipality, event and a short date interval. Use archives.services-publics.lu, locate the series and check index and full record. For reading-room orders follow registration and current description conditions.
  2. The official announcement says the new portal replaced Query on 20 March 2026. Reading-room orders require registration; check access and reproduction at document level, not just collection level.

Choose the right repository

Distinguish Luxembourg city, today’s Grand Duchy and the former duchy. For parish registers identify diocesan holdings; for civil registration follow municipality and judicial series rather than treating Luxembourg as one collection.

Choose a route from the record you have

  1. For a civil record identify municipality and first consult indexes where available. An index points to the register; it does not replace reading parents, witnesses and annotations in the full record.
  2. If the municipality is now outside Luxembourg check the repository indicated for that territory before declaring a gap. Keep a place record with names, event date and chosen holder; document uncertain identifications.

ANLux does not hold records for every locality of the former duchy now outside the country. Guidance directs you to other repositories by present territory. Some older help links still point to Query: use the portal announced in 2026.
