The connections that span generations
ROOT & GENEALOGY

Belgium

Identify historical municipality, province and document language before searching a person.

Prepare your research

Municipality, province, period, event and attested French, Dutch or German variants.

The method, step by step

  1. Use State Archives guidance and AGATHA to locate available registers.
  2. Browse indexes and the complete record. Keep original name spellings even when the register language changes.
  3. To extend a relationship, explore notarial, census and court collections at the relevant repository.

Choose the right repository

AGATHA locates registers; non-digitised collections require identifying a State Archives repository.

Choose a route from the record you have

  1. Separate name-based analysis from the original register. Analysis guides you; then find repository, commune, type and reference to check parents and witnesses.
  2. If blocked, select a documented alternative: notarial minutes, censuses or court archives. Confirm which repository holds it and prepare references before a visit.
