Read henkikirjat: Finnish tax lists

Henkikirjat supplement family research where parish registers have gaps. Their fiscal and later administrative purpose requires checking who was recorded and how households were arranged. This method concerns Finnish lists; a tax list does not necessarily represent the entire population.

The method, step by step

  1. Choose a limited question: which household occupied this property during this interval? Record village, historical parish and period from known evidence. Read Portti’s Henkikirjat guide to identify the series, then reach Astia. Keep original volume title, reference and years before seeking names.
  2. Identify county, parish or municipality, village, property and household section. Copy headings and abbreviations without assigning unverified meanings. A property name may track a location despite surname changes; continuity does not prove occupants are related.
  3. Compare neighbouring years: people actually named, property, observation and reference. A missing line is a question. Official guidance explains variations may reflect tax rules and recording practice. Seek independent evidence before concluding departure, death or household change.
  4. Separate list observations from identity established by other records. Cite series, volume, page or image and consultation date. Log probable relationships as hypotheses with a next record; property continuity does not prove parentage.

Frequently asked questions

Do henkikirjat always list every resident?

No. Purpose and recording rules changed. Finnish National Archives guidance explains that headcount variations may reflect tax rules or administrative practice. Compare years and another source before concluding departure or death.
