Collections to search
Scottish collections; name search and browsable volumes.
A workflow for this portal
Select record type, period and place. Compare results before opening an image. In Virtual Volumes, also search creator or reference when names are insufficient.
Access and copies
Index, image and certificate are separate services. Check coverage, any account requirement and copying costs on the official page.
Institutional reference page
Scotland’s People ↗The review covers the guidance page, not every image or ordering service.
What you can research here
Search separates people, places, virtual volumes, maps and images. Name options include exact, fuzzy, phonetic, prefix and wildcard matching. Virtual Volumes does not search every record collection.
Prepare a focused search
Log the matching mode and change it separately from the dates. For church-court records or tax rolls, select the relevant volume collection rather than repeating only a people search.
