Find naturalization records

Arrival, residence and naturalization are separate events. Start with the country, address and period of proceedings; settlement alone does not establish naturalization.

The method, step by step

  1. List used names, known birth date and successive addresses. Seek a dated census, letter or family document before choosing a collection.
  2. In the United States, NARA states that no central index covers all naturalizations. Local-court records may belong to other repositories; direct enquiries by court and residence.
  3. Distinguish application, declaration of intention, decision and certificate. A preliminary step does not establish the outcome. Follow cross-references to the corresponding document.
  4. Compare arrival dates, birthplaces and relatives with independent sources. For a current administrative procedure, ask the relevant authority which copies it accepts.
